Bank of America: 10% manufacturing growth for 15 years. My PhD: start with one ratio in every MSME’s P&L.

Image
Bank of America economists say India must grow manufacturing at ~10% annually for 15 years to lift its GDP share to 25% and enable Viksit Bharat. But India has ~9.6 crore MSMEs and only ~40,000 medium firms — the real job multiplier lies at the lower end. My PhD asks every MSME a simple but uncomfortable question: “Why did this line in your trading/P&L change vs last year, and what correction will free even a little working capital?” We build a two-year ratio benchmark — materials, power, labour, overheads, inventory, receivables — then correct line by line. Because GST data covers roughly 80–90% of variable costs , quarterly returns become an operational dashboard , not just compliance. They guide corrections in input mix, vendor choices, wastage, and pricing — directly improving cost control and pricing power . Add wage bills and electricity trends, and this becomes a continuous improvement loop that aligns finance, operations, and HR — an organisational alignment framew...

“Low-Cost, High-Impact: A Government-Backed MSME Efficiency Mission”

Image
India doesn’t need a massive new bureaucracy to unlock MSME potential. A focused, low-cost mission using interns, existing schemes, and simple ratio dashboards can deliver big jobs and GST gains. 1. What already exists MSME Champions Scheme: ZED, LEAN, Innovative. PMEGP, PM Vishwakarma, SFURTI, GeM, CGTMSE. Udyam registration, GST data, DIC/MSME-DI network. 2. What’s missing A unified, shop-floor level capacity & efficiency diagnostic linked to these schemes. A clear jobs-and-GST narrative to justify scaling. 3. Design of a “National MSME Efficiency Mission” Key elements: Pilot : 1,000–2,000 MSMEs in 5–10 clusters (engineering, textiles, food, etc.). Workforce : Train 200–300 interns/fellows (B-school, economics, engineering) in ratio framework. Each intern handles 5–10 MSMEs over 6–12 months. Tools : Standard data template (capacity, ratios, employment, GST). One-page dashboard per unit. Incentives : Link improvements to ZED/LEAN certification, priority lending, cluster support. ...

“8 Crore MSMEs, One Big Idea: 10% More Capacity Utilization, 3–4 Crore low-skill Jobs”

Image
“8 Crore MSMEs, One Big Idea: 10% More Capacity Utilization, 3–4 Crore low-skill Jobs” India already has factories. If we help MSMEs understand and use their true capacity, a modest 10% gain in capacity utilisation can create 3–4 crore low-skill jobs and add 1–2% to GDP—at very low fiscal cost. 1. The hidden asset: 8 crore MSMEs MSMEs already contribute ~30–31% of GDP and ~45% of exports. Over 6.3 crore enterprises; 5.7+ crore registered on Udyam; employment reported at 38+ crore. But most owners don’t know their real capacity utilisation . 2. The problem: “We’re full” but running at 50–60% No formal measurement of installed vs effective vs actual capacity. Chaos in scheduling, breakdowns, rework, absenteeism masks idle capacity. Result: owners say “no capacity” while data shows 40–60% utilisation. 3. The opportunity: +10 percentage points in capacity utilisation Simple ratio-based diagnostics can reveal 10–15% headroom in many units. No new machines needed—just better scheduling...

Operational Efficiency Through Better Alignment of People, Roles and Resources for MSMEs

Image
The entrepreneur’s biggest challenge is rarely HR. The real pain is operational: Production delays Dependency on the owner for daily decisions Poor delegation Underutilised workers Rising cost per unit Difficulty scaling operations These challenges are not solved by traditional HR systems alone. Most HR tools focus on attendance, payroll and employee records. While important, they do not answer the questions that directly impact business growth: Are the right people doing the right work? Are skills being fully utilised? Where are productivity gaps forming? How can operations scale without increasing complexity? The next opportunity lies in combining operational excellence with a technology backbone. A smarter approach helps MSMEs align: People + Roles + Skills + Resources + Workflows  This enables businesses to improve workforce utilisation, reduce bottlenecks, strengthen accountability and build systems that are less dependent on the owner. The future of MSME growth is not ...

Historic Ratio Analysis verses MIS For MSME

Image
Yesterday, I met a 79-year-old entrepreneur, a former Deputy General Manager of Syndicate Bank, who has been running a testing unit for nearly 30 years without interest expenditure. He confidently explained that he uses MIS every day to monitor his business. However, when I compared his Trading and Profit and Loss Accounts for two years, I observed a four-percentage-point decline in service gross margin. Since a testing unit has no conventional opening or closing stock, the focus was on revenue and direct testing costs such as reagents, consumables, direct labour and outsourced services. This experience reminded me that daily MIS and periodic benchmarking serve different purposes. MIS shows what is happening today, while historic ratio/comparative analysis reveals what is changing over time. For MSMEs with limited pricing power, quarterly benchmarking can become a practical self-diagnostic tool. By reviewing GST turnover, wages, electricity, direct costs and operational volumes, ...

SAPTA DHARA:- The Suzuki Blueprint: A 50-Year Lesson India Already Knows...

Image
In 1982, Suzuki didn't just build cars in India — it brought its vendors, trained them to global quality standards, and guaranteed offtake for those who delivered. Four decades later, India is among the world's largest auto component exporters, and that ecosystem keeps pulling in new global brands to manufacture — and export — from here. PM Modi's Saptadhara now places manufacturing first, built on cost, quality, and scale. We don't need a new theory. We need to repeat a proven playbook. Two tracks can get us there: Corporates with self-interest — domestic majors and defence manufacturers developing their own vendor base isn't charity, it's supply security and real cost control. CSR budgets can fund this — if paired with measurable capacity diagnostics, not just training certificates. Multinationals with long-term vision — Walmart's Vriddhi has already trained 70,000+ MSMEs. The opportunity now is to do for that base what Suzuki did in 1982: convert mentorsh...

An Open Letter to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji on Sapta Dhara and MSMEs

Image
An Open Letter to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji on Sapta Dhara and MSMEs Respected Prime Minister Modi Ji, I write to you as a Hyderabad-based academic and researcher with over 50 years of experience working closely with Indian MSMEs. Your Independence Day message on Sapta Dhara —quality-first manufacturing, technology-led growth, and “world as market”—resonates deeply with what I have seen on the ground for five decades. Your vision is clear and proactive. The policy direction is strong. But as you rightly implied, progress needs two hands to clap : the Government must lead, and entrepreneurs must step up with equal commitment. From my field work across Telangana, I see a hard reality: out of nearly 8 crore MSMEs , only a small fraction are truly ready to compete globally on quality, scale, and reliability. Many owners are trapped in survival mode—focused on cash flow and daily operations, not on process discipline, organizational alignment, or export readiness. Governme...

DATA IS THE NEW OIL FOR MSMEs

Image
Every entrepreneur loves quoting Mukesh Ambani: “Data is the new oil.” Yet inside most Indian MSMEs, that oil remains completely unrefined. Throughout my journey as an entrepreneur and consultant, customer data has been my primary lever to revive sick units and revitalize stagnant marketing. Today, AI makes finding, analyzing, and structuring data effortless. When you integrate data across customers, suppliers, and shop-floor workers , you unlock exponential operational growth. So why the resistance? The bottleneck isn't technology—it's mindset . Too many business owners rely strictly on gut feel while sitting on a goldmine of unanalyzed operational data. AI has democratized data analysis. The tools are ready and accessible. The real question is: Are MSME leaders ready to trade pure intuition for data-driven strategy? What is the biggest barrier to data adoption you see in MSMEs today? #MSME #DataAnalytics #IndianBusiness #AIforBusiness #Leadership #BusinessTransformation #Ent...

The Importance of Organisational Alignment

Image
The Importance of Organisational Alignment As part of my ongoing research on operational efficiency in Indian MSMEs, I analysed two years of financial ratios from seven units. Discussions around the question “Why has this ratio changed?” helped identify operational gaps and led to system improvements. New jobs were created, showing the potential connection between better systems, business growth and employment generation. The major focus of my research is the Organisational Alignment Framework (OAF) . The OAF examines alignment among three important organisational layers: The entrepreneur, who provides direction and makes strategic decisions. Middle management, which converts those decisions into plans and daily coordination. Workers, who execute the processes and experience operational realities directly. I developed 21 questions for all three layers separately, to understand how these three layers perceive organisational goals, communication, responsibilities, decision-ma...

Introducing the Organizational Alignment Framework

Image
Financial statements show the outcome of business activities. However, they may not reveal operational leakages early enough. By the time inefficiencies appear in the annual accounts, an MSME may already have lost money through material wastage, idle labour, rework, overtime, delays, and underutilised machinery. The Organizational Alignment Framework (OAF) begins with a brief financial diagnostic. Selected items from the Trading Account and Profit and Loss Account—such as material cost, wages, salaries, electricity, and rework—are expressed as a percentage of sales and compared with the previous period. This common-size approach helps identify important cost variances. The purpose is not to conduct a detailed financial audit. It is to ask: What operational and human factors have caused this variance? The entrepreneur, middle management, and workers must then reflect together. Does the entrepreneur’s vision reach the shop floor? Are managers converting priorities into clear daily...

Small Changes Create Big Results

Image
Small Changes Create Big Results Not every business problem needs a big solution. More often, it begins with a small improvement. A clearer instruction A better meeting A faster approval A smarter delegation Each of these may seem insignificant on its own. Together, they shape the way an organization performs. The result? ✔ Less confusion ✔ Faster decisions ✔ Greater ownership ✔ Stronger execution This is the power of organizational alignment . In many MSMEs, performance doesn't decline because of one major failure. It declines because of small inefficiencies repeated every day—an unclear task, a delayed decision, a missed follow-up, or a meeting without clear outcomes. Individually, these issues seem minor. Collectively, they reduce productivity, increase costs, and slow business growth. As the saying goes, "Take care of the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves." When leaders improve communication, clarify responsibilities, speed ...

Why Most MSMEs Operate Below Their Potential ?

Image
Why Most MSMEs Operate Below Their Potential ?   Most MSMEs don't fail from lack of machinery, people, or experience. They fail silently — because the system inside the business is weak. Unclear expectations. Poor communication. Weak delegation. Low trust. Daily operational friction. These aren't "small issues." They're the hidden leaks that drain productivity, delay decisions, and quietly cap what the business can become. In most MSMEs, the owner is the default problem-solver for everything. That keeps the business running today — and guarantees it can't scale tomorrow. No business grows beyond what memory, urgency, and the owner's constant presence can hold together. The real gap isn't resources, technology, or effort. It's coordination. Discipline. Clarity. Trust. Without these, even a fully-equipped MSME underperforms. So ask yourself: Is your business growing because the system is strong — or only because you're pushi...

What is Organizational Alignment

Image
What if your MSME isn't underperforming because people aren't working hard—but because they're working in different directions? In many MSMEs with turnover below ₹50 crore, the biggest challenge is not effort. It's alignment. Think of your organization as a human body. The entrepreneur is the brain, middle management is the nervous system, and employees are the hands and legs. When communication is delayed, responsibilities are unclear, or teams act without coordination, productivity quietly declines. The result? Rework increases, quality suffers, accountability weakens, deadlines slip, and hidden inefficiencies can drain 10–30% of productivity. The critical question is not, "Are people working hard?" It is, "Are they working toward the same goal?" True organizational alignment is not about tighter control. It is about ensuring everyone understands the purpose, their role, and how their work connects to the organization's objectives. Because su...

Your Accounts Are a Mirror — Most MSMEs Never Look Into Them...

Image
In my fieldwork with MSMEs, I saw the same pattern repeatedly. Accounts are prepared carefully — but only for tax filing or bank CMA data. Once the return is filed or the loan is sanctioned, the books are put aside. They are treated as a compliance document or a borrowing tool, not as a living record of the business. This is a costly habit. Your Trading and Profit & Loss Account is a mirror. Express every major line as a percentage of sales and compare it with last year. You instantly get 20–30 clear ratios: material cost %, labour %, power %, gross profit %, overheads %, interest %, and net profit %. Even a one-percentage-point shift reveals wastage, inefficiency, or pricing problems that absolute numbers hide. Once these ratios become benchmarks, use the data you already generate every quarter — GST returns, wages, and electricity bills. These three alone cover nearly 80% of variable costs. Track them against your benchmarks every 90 days. Problems can now be corrected in t...

E + R = O: The Leadership Equation That Shapes Your Legacy

Image
E + R = O: The Leadership Equation That Shapes Your Legacy Every professional faces moments that test character more than competence—setbacks, unfair decisions, or difficult people. While we often try to change what happens, true success depends on something deeper. E + R = O Event + Reaction = Outcome The Event is what happens. The Reaction is how we respond. The Outcome is what we ultimately create. In the Ramayana , when Kaikeyi sent Lord Rama into exile for fourteen years, the event was painful and unjust. Yet Rama chose duty, dignity, and calm acceptance. He could not control the event, but he fully controlled his reaction. That choice shaped his legacy as Purushottam Rama—an ideal of strength through composure. In our professional lives, the same principle applies. We cannot always control a difficult manager, a missed promotion, or a failed project. But we can control how we respond. Many lose energy resisting reality, replaying conflicts, or reacting emotionally—leading t...

Is Your MSME Really Aligned?

Image
I keep encountering the same puzzle. Units with new machinery, full order books, experienced staff — and still, underperformance. Rework climbs. Output slips. Deadlines get missed. And nobody can quite explain why. Our instinct is to check the machine, the material, the vendor. Rarely do we ask the harder question: does everyone on that floor actually know what "good" looks like right now? I've watched genuinely skilled employees deliver at half their capability — not from lack of ability, but because what they were told last month contradicts what they're being asked today. The owner has one priority. The supervisor communicates another. The worker executes a third. Nobody lied. Nobody's incompetent. The signal simply broke somewhere between intent and action. Is that a skills gap? A motivation problem? Or something quieter — a coherence problem? I'm increasingly convinced most MSMEs aren't short on capability. They're short on alignment — the i...

The 8 Habits That Separate Busy People from Productive People

Image
Being busy is not the same as being productive. In today's fast-paced world, many professionals spend their entire day in meetings, emails, and endless to-do lists, yet struggle to achieve meaningful results. True productivity comes from building the right habits, not simply working longer hours. The image highlights eight simple but powerful habits that can transform the way we work. It starts with removing the unimportant so we can focus on what truly matters. Applying the  80/20 Principle  reminds us that a small percentage of our efforts often creates the majority of our results. Instead of constantly pushing ourselves, taking strategic breaks helps maintain energy, creativity, and long-term performance. Equally important is eliminating distractions. Every notification, unnecessary meeting, or interruption takes us away from deep, focused work. Setting clear timelines creates accountability, while designing a productive workspace encourages consistency and concentra...

Data Visualization for MSMEs: Connect the Dots

Image
Every MSME generates valuable data from different business functions such as customers, vendors, finance, talent, leadership, communication, digital transformation, and predictive analytics. Individually, these are just isolated data points. However, when connected, they reveal meaningful insights that support better business decisions. The "Connect the Dots" concept illustrates this transformation in three stages. First, Knowledge represents scattered information with no visible relationships. Second, Experience helps connect some of these data points based on expertise, creating partial understanding. Finally, Creativity integrates all the connections into a complete picture, enabling leaders to identify opportunities, predict challenges, and make informed strategic decisions. For MSMEs, data visualization is more than presenting charts and dashboards—it is about understanding how every department influences business performance. When finance, operations, HR, sales, a...
